The Snake Charmer, Henri Rousseau, 1907

Forked Tongue

His very presence calls to them.
Ssssssslithering, Sssssssisssing, Ssssssslipppery.
They ooze from every imaginable space.
In the moment, there’s an odd beauty.

Ssssssslithering, Sssssssisssing, Ssssssslipppery.
He is master; they, his slaves.
In the moment, there’s an odd beauty.
Still, the moment’s fast past.

He is master; they, his slaves.
He bids and they listen.
Ssssssstill…. the moment’s fast past.
Under the moon’s light…

he bids and they listen.
Then, Sssssssuddenly, they Ssssssscatter
under the moon’s light
to do as bidden.

Then, Sssssssuddenly, they Ssssssscatter
Ssssssslithering here or there, Sssssssliding off
to do as bidden.
He watches them depart.

His notes Ssssssscintillate in fits and starts.
They ooze from every imaginable space.
Darkened soul, he has no heart.
His very presence calls to them.
