On Publishing: Mainstream vs. Do-it-yourself (Re-posted with some difficulty…LOL)

Why I Went from HarperCollins to Indie Publishing

Becky WicksSigning with a mainstream was my breakthrough, but it was also my downfall. I was signed to a three book deal with HarperCollins. A dream-come-true you might be thinking? Well, kind of.

I was young and naïve, with no clue about book marketing at all. I thought HarperCollins would make me a superstar. Not much happened. I waited some more. The international rights were sold but still, not much happened. Because no one did any marketing.

Getting Back to Writing

Wow! Has it really been
over two years since I’ve posted my writings?
Not that I’ve stopped writing
and all, no!

Over two years since I’ve posted my writings?
Yes, undeniably, I see that for dates don’t lie.
And all–         Know,
a lot of things were written…

Yes, undeniably. I see that, for dates don’t lie.
There are many bits and scraps of papers.
A lot of things were written,
I had not the time to organize…

There are many bits and scraps of paper
with gems of inspiration or story sparks caught.
I had not the time to organize…
hand jotted words, capturing images, experiences…

With gems of inspiration or story sparks caught,
I did my best to stay inner-connected.
Hand jotted words capturing images, experiences…
Then I began losing…

I did my best to stay inner-connected.
But I began misplacing bits and scraps.
Then I began losing…
Papers lost, I tried re-writing–

But I began misplacing bits and scraps!
There can be no going back!
Papers lost, I tried re-writing…
Sighs. My lost stories will never see the light of day.

There can be no going back!
I move forward.
Sighs. My, lost stories will never see the light of day.
But new ones can and shall be penned!

So it’s just been a long gestation, period;
not that I’ve stopped writing. No.
My bits and scraps prove it.
Wow! Has it really been…?

Time will tell.

Vidi, Vici, Veni

He rolled over laughing: “I came, I saw, I conquered.”

She stood, began dressing: “I’ll name, you’ll ‘aw *!*!#$%!!*’, you’ve fathered!”

On Writing a Novel: November is National Novel Writing Month

“Write something true.
Write something frightening.
Write something close to the bone.

You are on this planet to tell the story of what you saw here.

What you heard.
What you learned.

Any effort spent in that pursuit cannot be wasted.

Any way that you can tell that story more truly, more vividly, more you-ly, is the right way.”
~~ Catherynne

Catherynne M. Valente is the author of over 20 fiction and poetry books, including The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own MakingThe Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There, and the new The Girl Who Soared Over Fairyland and Cut the Moon in Two.
